Rizatriptan is used for the acute treatment of migraine. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea, which are mostly mild to moderate and transient. Most can be relieved by adjusting the way the medication is taken and daily arrangements. If they persist or worsen, medical evaluation is required.

I. Managing Dizziness

1. Sit and rest after taking the medication

Avoid standing up immediately or changing position quickly after taking the medication. Sit or lie semi-reclined and rest for a while first.

Move slowly when getting up to prevent falls caused by orthostatic dizziness.

2. Avoid dangerous activities

Do not drive, ride a bicycle, or operate machinery while dizzy.

At home, pay attention to slip-resistant floors and hold on for support in the bathroom and on stairs.

3. Observation and medical care

Mild dizziness usually resolves on its own during the medication's effect period.

If dizziness is severe, accompanied by a spinning sensation, fainting, or does not resolve, stop the medication and seek medical care.

II. Managing Drowsiness

1. Arrange medication timing reasonably

Try to take the medication at a time when you can rest, and avoid scheduling important work or going out after taking it.

Migraine attacks themselves tend to cause fatigue, so resting after taking the medication is reasonable.

2. Ensure safety

Do not drive or operate dangerous equipment while drowsy.

If living with family, inform them that you have taken the medication so they can check on you.

3. Observation and medical care

If drowsiness significantly affects daily life, or is accompanied by confusion or slurred speech, stop the medication and seek medical care.

If severe drowsiness occurs frequently, a doctor should evaluate whether to adjust the dose or switch medications.

III. Managing Nausea

1. Adjust medication intake and diet

Conventional tablets can be taken with a small amount of warm water; avoid taking them on an empty stomach, which may worsen stomach discomfort.

Avoid greasy, spicy, or overly filling food before and after taking the medication; eat small, frequent meals instead.

Orally disintegrating tablets require no water and may reduce stomach irritation.

2. Relief measures

When nauseated, rest lying down, keep the environment ventilated, and avoid strong odors.

Light food or warm water may be consumed to relieve stomach discomfort.

3. Observation and medical care

Mild nausea is usually transient and resolves as the medication's effect wears off.

If vomiting occurs frequently, you cannot eat or drink, or nausea is accompanied by abdominal pain or chest pain, seek medical care promptly.

For recurrent severe nausea, a doctor may adjust the dose or use antiemetics preventively.
