Rizatriptan is used for the acute treatment of migraine in adults and is not for prevention. Orally disintegrating tablets and conventional tablets contain the same active ingredient; the main difference is how they are taken, and the dosing principles are basically the same.

I. How to Take Orally Disintegrating Tablets and Conventional Tablets

1. Conventional tablets

Take with an appropriate amount of water; may be taken with food.

Take as early as possible during a migraine attack, but do not continue taking after the headache has resolved.

2. Orally disintegrating tablets

Place the tablet on the tongue, let it disintegrate on its own, and swallow with saliva; no water is needed.

Do not drink water immediately before or after taking the medication, as this may affect disintegration and absorption.

Keep hands dry when handling the tablet to avoid damage from moisture.

Do not split or crush the tablet.

3. General dosing principles

The usual single adult dose is 5 mg or 10 mg; follow the doctor's prescription.

If the headache recurs after the first dose, take another dose at least 2 hours after the first dose.

The total dose within 24 hours should not exceed 30 mg.

For patients taking propranolol, the single dose should not exceed 5 mg, and the total dose within 24 hours should not exceed 10 mg.

II. Handling Missed Doses and Repeated Dosing

1. Missed doses

This medication is taken as needed during attacks and has no fixed dosing time; therefore, a "missed dose" usually means not taking it promptly when an attack occurs.

If the migraine is still ongoing, take one usual dose as soon as possible as directed by the doctor.

If the headache has resolved on its own, no additional dose is needed.

2. Repeated dosing

Do not take another dose less than 2 hours after the last dose.

If 30 mg has already been used within 24 hours, do not increase the dose further.

If an overdose is taken accidentally, monitor closely and seek medical care promptly if chest pain, chest tightness, palpitations, or severe dizziness occurs.

III. Dose Adjustment and Precautions

1. Situations requiring dose adjustment

Concomitant use of propranolol: reduce to a single dose of 5 mg, with no more than 10 mg within 24 hours.

Mild to moderate hepatic impairment: consider using a lower dose.

Severe renal impairment: avoid use.

If efficacy is poor or adverse reactions are significant after initial use, a doctor should evaluate whether to adjust the dose or switch medications.

2. Limits of use

If there is no response to the first dose within 24 hours, do not take another dose for the same attack; seek medical evaluation.

Not for migraine prevention, and not for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.

Contraindicated in patients with ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, or uncontrolled hypertension.

If chest pain, shortness of breath, altered consciousness, or similar symptoms occur after taking the medication, stop it immediately and seek medical care.
