Precautions for taking/using azacitidine: bone marrow suppression, infection risk, and liver toxicity
During azacitidine treatment, must be emphasized; standardized monitoring and timely management are key to safe medication use.
I. Myelosuppression
1. Regular Blood Count Monitoring
Blood counts should be checked before treatment and before and after each cycle, focusing on neutrophils, platelets, and hemoglobin; the physician will adjust the dose or postpone administration accordingly.
2. Recognize Abnormal Manifestations
The occurrence of fever, worsened fatigue, gum bleeding, subcutaneous bruising, black stool, etc., suggests cytopenia and should be reported promptly with repeat blood count testing.
3. Avoid Self-Management
Do not self-administer leukocyte-elevating agents or hemostatic agents; dose adjustments must be decided by the physician.
II. Infection Risk
1. Protection During Neutropenia
Pay attention to hand hygiene, avoid crowded places, and avoid contact with infected individuals; food should be thoroughly heated to prevent intestinal infections.
2. Seek Medical Attention for Fever
If body temperature is ≥38°C or accompanied by chills, cough, sore throat, etc., seek medical attention immediately; do not self-administer antipyretics to mask symptoms.
3. Prevention and Monitoring
Assess whether prophylactic anti-infective treatment is needed as directed by the physician; if signs of infection appear, collect specimens as early as possible and begin empirical treatment.
III. Hepatotoxicity
1. Liver Function Monitoring
Check transaminases, bilirubin, etc., regularly before and during treatment; patients with abnormal liver function should increase monitoring frequency.
2. Watch for Signs of Liver Injury
If jaundice, darkened urine, right upper abdominal discomfort, worsened fatigue, etc., occur, report immediately and recheck liver function.
3. Management of Severe Liver Injury
Contraindicated in patients with severe liver injury; for mild to moderate abnormalities, the physician must assess whether to reduce or stop the drug; do not continue medication on your own.
IV. General Precautions
1. Recording and Follow-up
Record body temperature, signs of bleeding, and discomfort symptoms, and inform the physician at follow-up visits to facilitate early identification of toxicity.
2. Adjust According to Medical Orders
Any dose adjustment, interruption, or resumption of medication must follow medical orders; do not increase or decrease on your own.
3. Seek Medical Attention Promptly
If persistent fever, obvious bleeding, jaundice, or severe fatigue occurs, seek medical attention immediately.
