Azacitidine Medication Guide: Administration and Leakage Management
Azacitidine is used in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes and other conditions. Different routes of administration require different handling and missed-dose management.
I. Subcutaneous/Intravenous Administration
1. Subcutaneous Injection
After preparation, the solution should be used as soon as possible. Injection sites may be rotated (e.g., abdomen, thigh), avoiding injection into areas with induration, bruising, or inflammation to reduce local reactions.
2. Intravenous Administration
For intravenous infusion, the infusion time must be controlled according to medical orders. After preparation, the solution should be stored under specified conditions and the infusion completed as soon as possible; the rate must not be increased arbitrarily.
3. Pre-dose Assessment
Before each dose, blood counts and liver and kidney function should be checked. If significant myelosuppression or signs of infection occur, the physician must assess whether to adjust the dose or postpone administration.
II. Oral Tablet Administration
1. Swallow Whole
Oral tablets should be swallowed whole with water. They must not be split, crushed, or chewed, to avoid affecting efficacy or increasing exposure risk.
2. Fixed Time
Take at approximately the same time each day. It may be taken with food or on an empty stomach (according to the package insert and medical orders), maintaining a regular dosing schedule.
3. Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, and there is a long interval before the next dose, it may be taken as directed by the physician; if the next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next dose as originally scheduled. Do not take a double dose at once.
III. Missed Doses and Precautions
1. Missed Subcutaneous/Intravenous Dose
If a scheduled in-hospital dose is missed, contact the healthcare team to reschedule. Do not self-administer an extra dose or adjust subsequent doses; continue with the original regimen afterward.
2. Vomiting
If vomiting occurs after oral administration, do not immediately take another dose. Consult the physician or pharmacist and follow medical instructions to avoid duplicate dosing.
3. Recording and Follow-up
Patients should record dosing times and missed doses and inform the physician at follow-up visits; any dose adjustment must follow medical orders and must not be made independently.
