Management of side effects of febuxostat: how to deal with liver dysfunction, nausea, and joint pain
Overall, febuxostat is well tolerated, but some patients may experience liver dysfunction, nausea, or joint pain. Scientific management of these side effects can help improve treatment compliance.
1、 Abnormal liver function
1. Monitoring: During the initial treatment and medication period, regular follow-up examinations of liver function (ALT, AST, etc.) are required.
2. Identification: If there is fatigue, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the skin or sclera, be alert to liver damage.
3. Response: If the transaminase level is slightly elevated (<3 times the normal upper limit), medication can be continued and monitoring should be strengthened; If there is a significant increase or symptoms of liver damage, follow the doctor's advice to stop medication or adjust the plan.
2、 Nausea and gastrointestinal reactions
1. Medication method: Change to taking medication half an hour after meals to reduce direct stimulation to the stomach.
2. Dietary adjustment: Avoid taking medication on an empty stomach, choose light and easily digestible foods, and eat small meals frequently.
3. Emergency response: If nausea is obvious, consult a doctor to see if antiemetic medication or temporary reduction is needed.
3、 Joint pain (gout attack)
1. Reason for understanding: Fluctuations in blood uric acid levels during the early stages of medication may trigger acute attacks of gout, which is a normal phenomenon and should not be self stopped.
2. Preventive measures: When starting medication, doctors usually use low-dose colchicine or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in combination, and it is necessary to adhere to the full course of treatment.
3. Treatment during an attack: If joint redness, swelling, and pain occur, continue taking febuxostat and use anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs according to medical advice to control symptoms.
