Precautions for taking testosterone undecylate capsules: prostate monitoring, polycythemia, and liver toxicity
During the period of taking testosterone undecylate capsules, it is important to pay close attention to changes in the prostate gland, blood indicators, and liver function to prevent potential risks.
1、 Prostate monitoring
Regular rectal digital examination and serum PSA testing should be performed before and after treatment.
If PSA is significantly elevated or nodules are palpable, medication should be suspended and referral to urology should be made.
Patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia need to be evaluated for changes in urinary tract symptoms.
2、 Erythrocytosis
Androgens can stimulate the production of red blood cells and increase blood viscosity.
Blood routine tests should be rechecked at the beginning, third month, and sixth month of treatment, and annually thereafter.
If the hematocrit continues to exceed 54%, medication should be suspended or reduced, and intravenous bleeding should be performed if necessary.
3、 Hepatotoxicity
The drug is metabolized by the liver and liver function needs to be checked every 3 months.
When jaundice, darkened urine color, or upper right abdominal pain occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and liver damage should be investigated.
Avoid co administration with other hepatotoxic drugs.
4、 Other important reminders
Due to the risk of fluid retention, weight and lower limb edema should be monitored in elderly patients, patients with heart failure or renal failure.
Long term users should evaluate their blood lipids and sleep apnea status.
If severe headache, visual impairment, or lower limb pain and swelling occur, seek medical attention immediately.
